The built environment is in the middle of a structural change, only comparable to the change that took place two generations ago following World War II. Since the mid-1990s, many consumers have been demanding different options to the “one-size-fits-all” drivable sub-urban development. This change, marked by the convergence of the rising millennial generation and soon-to-retire Baby Boomers, is characterized by areas where daily needs can be met within walking distance, or “walkable urbanism.” This includes downtown and suburban downtown revitalization, New Urbanism, transit-oriented development, and other new ways of building.
But how does this new model work in North Texas, and specifically in the socio-political climate of Tarrant County? Are Texans ready to surrender their cars (or at least one of them) and live in more dense areas? Will local governments and current residents be supportive?
Hear the latest news on this trend from Chris Leinberger, national expert on walkable urban development. Using detailed economic data, Leinberger identifies the value-add created by walkability, building support for these projects.
Panel members will explore the real-world challenges of creating walkable developments when dealing with wary existing neighborhoods, outdated or inflexible regulations, and market perceptions and realities.
Keynote Speaker: Chris Leinberger
Land use strategist, professor, real estate developer, and author who balances business realities with social and environmental concerns. Named as one of The 100 Most Influential Urbanists of all time in a 2017 Planetizen poll.
